Berlin Festival 2010: Boarding completed! Gang Of Four, Edwyn Collins und mehr steigen in Tempelhof ein

Es war ja klar, dass da noch was kommen würde: die Reiseveranstalter vom Berlin Festival haben uns bis 6 Wochen vor dem Festival zappeln lassen, um noch den ein oder anderen prominenten Gast aus dem Hut zu zaubern. Je später der Abend…
Und dabei handelt es sich um echte Ehrengäste: die wiedervereinigten Gang Of Four („To Hell With Poverty“) – so ziemlich die Referenz jeder britischen Band der letzten 10 Jahre – spielt ihre einzige Deutschlandshow 2010 auf dem ehemaligen Zentralflughafen Tempelhof!
Auch auf diesen Besucher freuen wir uns ganz besonders: Edwyn Collins is back. Nach jahrelanger, schwerer Krankheit ist die Indie-Ikone (Orange Juice, „A Girl Like You“) im September mit einem neuen Album am Start, was er mit einigen Freunden eingespielt hat. Wir hoffen, dass ihn ein paar der Freunde zu seinem einzigen Berlin-Gig begleiten werden, handelt es sich doch um Mitglieder von Franz Ferdinand, The Drums und The Smiths…
Und die musikalische Reise geht weiter: Tahiti 80 aus Frankreich bieten großen Pop, Soul und Indie-Rock. Ein französischer Südsee-Trip, wie gemacht fürs Berlin Festival. Das kalifornische Pendant wird ebenfalls in die deutsche Hauptstadt eingeflogen: The Morning Benders geben sich ein Stelldichein.
Aus Reykjavík/Island reisen die zauberhaften Amiina, langjährige Weggefährten und die String-Section von Sigur Ros an. Sie spielen ihre nagelneuen Songs: elfenhafter Klassik-Elektro-Folk.
Und die Kurzstrecke aus Norddeutschland machen die Jungs um Enno Bunger: smarte Texte und „mindestens fünf große Hits“ (Intro) im Reisegepäck. Bitte auspacken!

Aber Reiseleiter Conny Opper, Mitbegründer des Berlin Festivals, nimmt die Besucher auch mit auf einen Berliner Kulturtrip, der über die Musik hinausgeht:
“Von Anfang an war uns klar: zu einem urbanen Festival gehört auch ein urbanes Kunstkonzept, welches den Flughafen Tempelhof auf eine spannende Art und Weise transformiert und bespielt und die Kreativität und Weltoffenheit Berlins zum Ausdruck bringt. Nachdem bereits im letzten Jahr die künstlerische Aktion ganz groß geschrieben wurde, wird dieses Jahr mit dem Hangar Art Trail dieser Schwerpunkt des Festivals noch weiter ausgebaut. So wird Gerrit Starczewski zum Beispiel exklusiv erstmalig Bilder seines auf dem Melt! Festival entstandenen Projekts nakedHEART zeigen, der Action Painting Club wird das “t∆pc-mandala-constructions”-Projekt live auf dem Festival Gelände umsetzen, Nomad wird seine Graffiti-Wände remixen, Paul Snowden ist wieder für das gesamte Artwork des Berlin Festival verantwortlich, Robert Knoke wird sein e tolle Musiker- und Künstler-Portraitserie zeigen und die Crystal Mafia wird große Photobooth-Action machen…! Natürlich wird auch wieder die legendäre Mobile Disko in erweiterter Form Einsatz sein. Diesmal mit den Jungs von der Berlin Battery Crew feat. Shir Khan, DJ Supermarkt und Jack Tennis. Dazu werden Berlins Sick Girls ihr erstes offizielles Mix-Album-Release präsentieren – auch live. Hugo Capablanca wird sein neues Projekt Los Massieras auf Bananamania Records präsentieren. Und es gibt noch viel mehr zu sehen und hören. Man darf also auch 2010, nicht nur musikalisch, aufs Berlin Festival mächtig gespannt sein!”

Die Popkomm Showcases
finden bereits am 8. und 9. September in und um das Flughafengelände Tempelhof statt. Berlin-Festival-Gänger können sich dort spannende neue Bands gratis als Einstimmung auf das eigentliche Festival anschauen. Dementsprechend öffnet unser Bändchentausch bereits ab Mittwoch, den 8. September in der Tempelhofer Eingangshalle, die übrigens vom 8. bis 11. September für jedermann frei zugänglich sein wird und das Zentrum der “Berlin Music Week” bildet.

Berlin Festival 2010: Boarding completed! Gang Of Four, Edwyn Collins and more to get on board at Tempelhof

It was clear from the start: Berlin Festival’s line-up wasn’t quite completed just yet: Our “travel agents” let us dangle for six whole weeks to announce the final additions to this year’s line-up at Tempelhof Airport.

However, it was well worth it, as we present striking rock’n’roll guests of honour: the reunited Gang Of Four (“To Hell With Poverty”) – pretty much the reference point for all British bands of the last ten years – will perform their only show in Germany of 2010 at Tempelhof Airport!
Another delightful festival performer that we are very much looking forward to: Edwyn Collins is back! After his long and severe illness, the indie icon (Orange Juice, “A Girl Like You”) is about to release a brand-new album in September and invited some friends to support him. We hope, of course, that Collins will be performing his Berlin Festival gig with just a little help from his friends, namely members of Franz Ferdinand, The Drums, The Smiths and many more who recorded the album with him.
The musical journey goes on: Tahiti 80 from France will deliver grand pop sound, soul and indie rock. A trip to the coastal strips of France – downright perfect for Berlin Festival. The Californian equivalent will be flown in to the German capital as well: The Morning Benders are about to make an appearance.

>From Reykjavík, Iceland, the magical Amiina will also travel to Berlin. They have been accompanying Sigur Rós on tour for quite a while. Amiina will perform their brand-new songs in Tempelhof: elfish classical electro folk tunes at its best.
Only a short trip away, the boys surrounding Enno Bunger will begin their journey to Berlin in Northern Germany: smart lyrics and “at least five great hits” (Intro) are part of their luggage. Please unpack immediately on arrival!

However, our travel guide Conny Opper, co-founder of Berlin Festival, will take all visitors not only on a musical journey but on a cultural tour as well:
“It was clear from the start: an urban festival has to be accompanied by an urban art concept that will excitingly transform Tempelhof Airport in order to reveal the creativity and open-mindedness of Berlin. Since last year’s art projects were a big issue, this year’s Hangar Art Trail will enhance the emphasis on art even further. Gerrit Starczewski will present pictures of his nakedHEART project shot at Melt! Festival 2010. Action Painting Club will implement its project “t∆pc-mandala-constructions” live at the festival grounds while Nomad is about to ‘remix’ his graffiti walls. Paul Snowden, on the other hand, is once again responsible for the whole Berlin Festival artwork, and Robert Knoke is about to exhibit his fantastic portrait series of musicians and artists. Last but not least, Crystal Mafia will launch decent photo booth action galore…!

Of course, the legendary Mobile Disko will make its festival appearance with even more features than last year. This time, the boys of the Berlin Battery Crew feat. Shir Khan, DJ Supermarkt, and Jack Tennis will rock the Disko. Berlin’s Sick Girls will present their first mix album (live as well). Hugo Capablanca will be presenting his new project Los Massieras (Bananamania Records). There’s even more to see and hear. So you won’t just be able to look forward to Berlin Festival’s music performances but an overall audio-visual festival experience!”

Popkomm Showcase Festival
takes place on 8th and 9th September at and around Tempelhof Airport. Festival goers will be able to see thrilling up and coming talents for free to ring in the actual festival. Wristband exchange, therefore, already begins on Wednesday, 8th September, at Tempelhof’s entrance hall, Berlin Musik Week’s hub, which will be open to all from 8th to 11th September.
